The Kelly Shift Pattern is a common pattern in fire departments and emergency services that provides 24-hour coverage. This pattern is made up of 3 teams (or crews) and 3 24-hour Shift Durations. This shift pattern occurs on a 9-day cycle, in which teams work a total of 3 days, and have 6 days off. Employees work an average of 56 hours per week or 112 hours per two-week pay period.

Kelly Days are mandatory days off within an employee’s schedule. The frequency of these days can depend on the policy of the organization or the type of schedules employees follow.

Pros of the Kelly Shift Schedule:

  • Employees get a consecutive 4 days off each rotation.
  • Employees never work for an entire weekend.

Cons of the Kelly Shift Schedule:

  • Employees work 24-hour shifts, which can lead to fatigue and productivity issues
